Warehouse supervisor phone screen questions
A supervisor screen separates people who have actually run a shift from strong associates who want to. Ask for numbers, ask about the hard conversations, and confirm they can work the shift you are hiring for.
Eight questions, and what to listen for
Ask them in this order. The first two sort the pool; the middle ones show judgment; the last ones settle logistics before anyone books an interview.
- 1
Tell me about the last shift you supervised: crew size, what you shipped or picked, and your targets.
Listen for: Headcount, units or lines per hour, on-time numbers. Real supervisors know these cold.
- 2
How do you handle an associate who keeps missing rate or showing up late?
Listen for: Conversation first, documentation, escalation with HR. Neither ignoring it nor firing on the spot.
- 3
Tell me about a safety incident on your shift and what changed afterward.
Listen for: Ownership, a root cause, a specific fix.
- 4
What systems have you used to run the floor: WMS, labor management, scheduling?
Listen for: Named tools. Manhattan, Blue Yonder, SAP EWM, Kronos, UKG.
- 5
How do you plan a shift when you are three people short?
Listen for: Reprioritizing waves, cross-training, calling in help, telling the manager early.
- 6
Have you run a start-of-shift meeting? What do you cover?
Listen for: Safety, targets, staffing, recognition. Short and daily.
- 7
Which shifts are you available for, including nights and weekends?
Listen for: Must match the opening.
- 8
When could you start, and can you pass a background check and drug screen?
Listen for: A date and a yes.
Red flags on the call
- Cannot give a single throughput number
- Handles attendance problems by ignoring them
- No safety story at all
- Shift availability mismatch
Keep it short
Five questions, four to six minutes. Warehouse supervisor candidates are usually applying to several jobs at once; a screen they can finish between shifts gets finished. Save the deeper questions for the interview, where the candidate has already answered these once.
Never ask about age, health, family, religion, or national origin, and do not follow up if a candidate volunteers them.
