Why teams use it

A first-round interview for every applicant, without adding a recruiter

Interview everyone, not the first twenty

Every applicant gets a real first-round interview the moment they are ready, including the ones who apply at 11pm on a Sunday. Nobody waits on a recruiter’s calendar.

The same interview, every time

Your questions, in your order, scored on the same rubric for every applicant, location and recruiter. Two candidates for the same role are always compared like for like.

Scored the minute they hang up

A score out of 100 for every answer with the reasoning behind it, an overall read, flags to double-check, the recording and the full transcript, about a minute after the call.

In 34 languages

Candidates pick their language and the whole interview runs in it, from Spanish and Haitian Creole to Somali, Amharic and Khmer. You read every transcript and score in English.

Live in about ten minutes

Paste a job posting and it drafts five questions in about ten seconds. Edit them, test the call on your own phone, and share the link. No implementation project.

What the AI interviewer does

Everything below is in the product today.

Structured, role-based interviews

Each role has its own questions and context. The interviewer asks them one at a time, in order, and does not improvise new ones.

On demand, 24/7, by phone

Candidates call in from a link whenever suits them, or you have it call them. Nights, weekends and holidays included.

A natural conversation

It speaks naturally, handles interruptions, waits when a candidate pauses to think, and wraps up politely if someone is not interested.

Follow-up when an answer is thin

If an answer is short or vague, it asks once for a concrete example, then moves on. It answers the candidate’s questions about pay or schedule from your notes.

Rubric-based, explainable scoring

Every answer is scored 0 to 100 against the question you asked, with the reasoning written out. Yes/no questions like a license or a shift are scored as yes or no.

Summaries, transcripts and recordings

An overall impression, per-question takeaways, recruiter flags, the full transcript (translated to English when needed) and the recording, on one page.

Your interviewer, set up your way

Choose its name and one of seven voices, give it guidance on tone and what to say about the job, and test-call it before a single candidate hears it.

Picks up where a dropped call left off

If the line drops partway, the candidate calls back and it resumes at the next unanswered question. Call again after finishing and it answers questions instead of re-interviewing.

Voicemail and phone-tree aware

It recognizes voicemail, phone menus and hold music, never leaves a robotic voicemail, and you are never charged for a call that did not become an interview.

Resumes scored on arrival

When a candidate arrives with a resume, from your ATS, the API or the apply form, it is scored against the job automatically and shown next to their interview.

Interview analytics

Applicants, completed interviews, completion rate, average score and call length, by role, over the last 7, 30 or 90 days.

ATS, API, webhooks and MCP

New applicants start interviews automatically from your ATS or Zapier, results post back by webhook, and you can run all of it from ChatGPT or Claude.

Channels

Where candidates take the interview

Built around the phone, because that is what hourly applicants have with them.

Phone, candidate calls in

The default. One link, one number, any hour. The call always connects because the candidate dialed it.

Phone, we call the candidate

Call one candidate now from the dashboard, the API or your AI assistant. Scheduled call campaigns with retries are switched on per account.

Text message

Invites, a text before an outbound call, and a follow-up text after a missed call, in the candidate’s language.

Email

Invite candidates to interview by email, one at a time or in a batch.

Video or web interview

Not offered. Hourly applicants apply from a phone, often between shifts, and a phone call is the one format they can always finish.

Calls and texts go to US and Canadian numbers. More on calling candidates.

Compliance guardrails

Built in, not left to settings

These rules are part of how the interviewer works. An employer cannot switch them off.

How we use AI in hiring
  • It always says it is an AI, and that rule overrides any instruction from the employer.
  • Every call opens with a recording notice.
  • It never asks about age, health, disability, family, religion, national origin or other protected characteristics, and the question writer will not draft them.
  • It never accepts or rejects anyone. People make every hiring decision.
  • Every score has its reasoning, the recording and the transcript, so you can show how a decision was made.

“We used to lose 45 minutes per candidate scheduling the call, taking it, and writing it up. Now we send a link, the candidate does the screen whenever it suits them, and I review it on my own time in about five minutes. That time went straight back to our team.”

Questions

What buyers ask about AI interviewers

What is an AI interviewer? +

Software that runs a structured first-round interview without a recruiter on the line. PhoneScreen’s AI interviewer does it by phone: it asks the employer’s questions in order, follows up once when an answer is thin, answers the candidate’s questions about the job, and scores each answer against the question asked. People read the results and decide who moves on.

What types of interviews can it run? +

First-round screening interviews for hourly and high-volume roles: experience, certifications and licenses, availability, transportation, situational questions, and anything else you can ask and score on a call. It is not a coding test or a video assessment.

How does it handle incomplete answers? +

If an answer is short or vague, it asks once for a concrete example, the way a good recruiter would, then moves to the next question. It does not badger, and it does not invent questions you did not write.

Is the scoring fair and consistent? +

Every applicant for a role gets the same questions in the same order, scored on the same rubric, whoever they are and whenever they call. Each score comes with written reasoning, the recording and the transcript, so it can be checked. It never asks about protected characteristics, and it never makes the hiring decision.

Will candidates know they are talking to an AI? +

Yes. It introduces itself as an AI assistant, says so plainly if anyone asks, and no employer setting can change that. Every call also opens with a recording notice.

Which channels can candidates use? +

Phone. Candidates call in from a link or you have it call them; invites and follow-ups go by text or email. There is no app to download and nothing to schedule. Video and web-chat interviews are not offered.

How does it work with our ATS? +

New applicants can start interviews automatically from Indeed, CareerPlug, Hireology, ApplicantPro, Workstream, Zapier, or the API. When an interview completes, the score, per-question answers, transcript and recording link post back to your ATS or any URL by webhook.

How long does setup take for a new role? +

About ten minutes. Paste the job posting, edit the five questions it drafts, test-call the interviewer on your own phone, and share the apply link or connect your ATS.

How much does it cost? +

$4 per completed interview after your first 10, which are free. No seats, no monthly fee, no contract, and no card to start. Voicemails, missed calls and candidates who decline are never charged.

Which languages does it speak? +

34, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Haitian Creole, Mandarin, Cantonese, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Korean, Russian, Ukrainian, Arabic, Hindi, Punjabi, Somali, Amharic, Swahili and Khmer. The whole interview runs in the candidate’s language; you read it in English.
