Non-CDL delivery roles hinge on the driving record, the physical work, and route discipline. Drivers apply on their phones and call from the road; a call-in screen meets them there.
Eight questions, and what to listen for
Ask them in this order. The first two sort the pool; the middle ones show judgment; the last ones settle logistics before anyone books an interview.

Do you have a valid driver's license, and how long have you had it?
Listen for: Yes, class, years.

Listen for: Honest and specific. The MVR will confirm.

Tell me about any delivery, courier, or route driving you have done.
Listen for: Stops per day, vehicle type, tenure.

Can you lift 50-pound packages repeatedly and get in and out of a van 100+ times a day?
Listen for: A plain yes or a stated limit.

How do you handle a route that is running late?
Listen for: Communicate with dispatch, prioritize, stay safe. Speeding as a solution is a red flag.

Listen for: Yes.

Which days can you work, and are early starts workable?
Listen for: Match to the route schedule.

Can you pass a background check and drug screen, and when could you start?
Listen for: A yes and a date.
Red flags on the call
- Recent at-fault accidents or a suspension
- Physical demands not workable
- Late-route answer involves speeding
- Cannot do early starts
Keep it short
Five questions, four to six minutes. Delivery driver candidates are usually applying to several jobs at once; a screen they can finish between shifts gets finished. Save the deeper questions for the interview, where the candidate has already answered these once.
Never ask about age, health, family, religion, or national origin, and do not follow up if a candidate volunteers them.
