Warehouse associate phone screen questions

Picker, packer, loader: the questions are about pace, accuracy, physical demands, and showing up. Screening for those before the site tour cuts no-shows sharply.

Eight questions, and what to listen for

Ask them in this order. The first two sort the pool; the middle ones show judgment; the last ones settle logistics before anyone books an interview.

  1. 1

Tell me about your last warehouse or physical job and what a shift looked like.

Listen for: Tasks, pace, and tenure.

  2. 2

Have you used RF scanners, pick-to-light, or a warehouse management system?

Listen for: Any is a plus; none is fine with training.

  3. 3

How do you stay accurate when picking at speed?

Listen for: Double-checking, scanning discipline, asking when unsure.

  4. 4

Can you lift 50 pounds repeatedly and stand or walk for a 10-hour shift?

Listen for: A plain yes or a clear limit.

  5. 5

Which shifts can you work: days, nights, or weekends?

Listen for: Match to the opening.

  6. 6

Tell me about a time you noticed a safety problem at work. What did you do?

Listen for: Reported it, stopped the task. Silence is a red flag.

  7. 7

How do you get to work, and how far is the commute?

Listen for: Reliable transportation; long commutes to early shifts fail.

  8. 8

    When could you start?

    Listen for: A date.

Red flags on the call

  • Cannot describe a past shift
  • Physical requirements not workable
  • Shift mismatch
  • No transportation plan

Keep it short

Five questions, four to six minutes. Warehouse associate candidates are usually applying to several jobs at once; a screen they can finish between shifts gets finished. Save the deeper questions for the interview, where the candidate has already answered these once.

Never ask about age, health, family, religion, or national origin, and do not follow up if a candidate volunteers them.
