Cashier and retail associate phone screen questions
Seasonal spikes bury store managers in applications. A phone screen that checks availability, register comfort, and customer handling lets a manager interview the ten who fit instead of calling forty.
Eight questions, and what to listen for
Ask them in this order. The first two sort the pool; the middle ones show judgment; the last ones settle logistics before anyone books an interview.
- 1
Tell me about your most recent retail or customer-facing job.
Listen for: Setting, duties, and how long they stayed. Tenure matters more than the brand.
- 2
Have you handled a register or POS, including returns and cash counts?
Listen for: Yes/no with specifics. Cash handling experience is a real differentiator.
- 3
Describe a time a customer was frustrated. How did you handle it?
Listen for: Calm, solution, escalation when needed.
- 4
What hours and days are you available, including evenings and weekends?
Listen for: Exact availability. Retail schedules are the deal-breaker.
- 5
Are you comfortable standing for a full shift and lifting up to 30 pounds for stocking?
Listen for: A plain yes or a stated limit.
- 6
How do you approach a slow hour on the floor?
Listen for: Restocking, facing, helping others. Initiative shows here.
- 7
Have you worked a holiday season before? What was it like?
Listen for: Realism about pace.
- 8
When could you start, and is this a seasonal or long-term fit for you?
Listen for: Honesty about intent helps you plan.
Red flags on the call
- Availability that excludes weekends for a weekend role
- No customer-facing experience and no interest in it
- Frustrated-customer story with no resolution
- Cannot say when they can start
Keep it short
Five questions, four to six minutes. Cashier and retail associate candidates are usually applying to several jobs at once; a screen they can finish between shifts gets finished. Save the deeper questions for the interview, where the candidate has already answered these once.
Never ask about age, health, family, religion, or national origin, and do not follow up if a candidate volunteers them.
Run this exact screen for every cashier and retail associate who applies
Create a role in PhoneScreen with these five questions, share the link, and every candidate gets the same screen the moment they call. You read the scorecards. First 10 screens are free.

Common questions
We hire hundreds of seasonal associates. Is there a per-seat cost? +
No. You pay per completed screen, with no seats or monthly fee, so a seasonal spike costs only for the screens that happen.
